MYSORE : Aakar-2014, a two-day national-level civil engineering technical event, began at NIE Diamond Jubilee Sports Complex on Friday. Speaking at the inaugural function, H J Padmanabha, chief manager (civil works) of HAL, said that civil engineering is a diverse field. \”It is coordinated with multi-disciplinary engineering works. Civil engineering students should not think that they have less opportunity in this field,\” he said, adding: \’civil\’ engineers must have qualities like \’c\’reativity, \’i\’ntegrety, \’v\’alidation , \’i\’ndustrialization besides being \’l\’anguor.

Speaking on the occasion, NIE principal G L Shekar said that India is poised for a huge growth. \”The central government intends to focus more on infrastructure. Japan has come forward to invest $30 billion in India, while China has offered $20 billion. Such investments indicate opportunity for civil engineering students,\” he said.
Around 160 students from 30 colleges are taking part in the event. Technical quiz, treasure hunt, geo-technical event, paper presentation, Auto CAD, 3D modelling, technical debate, and village planning have been lined up as part of competitions.
