15 Closet Organization Ideas for Whipping Your Closet Into Shape!

Spring is the perfect time to give your closet a makeover and turn it into a functional and organized space. Before our oldest daughter came back from her study abroad program, I set out to add some much-needed organization to her bedroom closet. The closet was a typical one with a single rod and shelf, leaving a lot of wasted space. My goal was to add more hanging and storage space so she could have a spot for all her clothing without it overflowing into other rooms and closets in our house.

Transform Your Closet with a Closet System

If you have a closet that’s like my daughter’s, with a single rod and shelf, installing a closet system can make a huge difference. There are many closet systems available in the market, but my two favorite ones are IKEA’s PAX system and The Container Store’s Elfa system.

IKEA’s PAX System

The PAX system involves a series of wardrobe frames with customizable interiors. You can add hanging rods, drawers, shelves, and other specialized add-ons. This system is perfect for those who want a tailored look and feel.

The Container Store’s Elfa System

The Elfa system is a totally different concept. It involves hanging a top track high up along the length of your closet and then adding vertical rails that a variety of customizable components hang from. This system is perfect for those who want a lot of flexibility and customization options.

Corral Caps with a Simple Hanger

When I organized our hall closet a few months ago, I wanted to find a better solution for storing baseball caps. I found a simple and inexpensive Velcro strip with hanging clips that you can wrap around your own hanger. This cap organizer holds ten caps and keeps them neatly organized and easy to grab.

Store Pillows and Blankets Dust-Free

The top shelf of your closet is perfect for storing bedding that you don’t need to access on a daily basis, like extra pillows and blankets. I love using storage bags for storing them dust-free. Each bag is the perfect size for storing three sleeping pillows or multiple quilts or blankets.

Hang Your Totes and Clutches

If you have a lot of handbags, totes, and clutches like my daughter does, you’ll want to add some closet organizers that will keep them neatly in your closet. One organizer I found and love is an acrylic under-shelf hanging organizer that hangs under wire shelves. Another simple solution is a handbag hanger that you can use to hold your totes.

Take Advantage of Behind-the-Door Space

If you have hinged closet doors, there are many behind-the-door storage solutions available. You can use over-the-door hooks to hold a robe, pajamas, or clothes that you plan to rewear. There are also behind-the-door storage cabinets that attach to the hinges of the door and move open and closed with the door.

Stack Up Your Shoes

There are many ways to add shoe storage to your closet, even if you’re tight on space. You can stack them on the bottom of the closet using labeled shoe boxes or clear stackable boxes. You can also place shoes in an over-the-door hanger or on the floor of your closet in a couple of bins or baskets.

Place Large Artwork in Portfolios

If you have kids, you probably have a stash of childhood artwork from over the years. Smaller art pieces can be stored in archival storage boxes, but what do you do with oversized artwork? You can use large plastic art portfolios to store them. They’re very sturdy, snap shut at the top, and have a handle for easy carrying.

Divide Up Your Shelves

Once you get your closet organized, you want it to stay that way – shelf dividers can help with that! If you have a long shelf for storing sweaters or other clothes, over time your originally neat stacks tend to morph into an unorganized pile. Shelf dividers can help get your stacks organized and keep them that way.

Save Space with Slim Velvet Hangers

When we moved from Ohio to Connecticut, we went from a large walk-in closet to a tiny shared one, and we literally couldn’t fit all of our clothes in it. I swapped out our hangers for slim velvet hangers, and I was amazed by how much more hanging space it gave us!

Loop Your Scarves

If you have a lot of scarves like we do, you’ll want to find a storage solution that works. You can use a scarf organizer with over 20 wire loops for holding scarves. You can also use a tie hanger with smaller straight wire loops for hanging up to 20 ties.

Tackle Your Ties with a Hanger

If you have a lot of ties like my husband does, you’ll want to find a storage solution that works. You can use a tie hanger with smaller straight wire loops for hanging up to 20 ties.

If you have a lot of belts like we do, you’ll want to find a storage solution that works. You can use an acrylic belt organizer with each belt having a box compartment. You can also use a similar organizer made of bamboo.

Make Use of Every Inch with Baskets and Bins

If you have high ceilings, there’s a good chance that your closet has a lot of unused space at the top of it. This is the perfect spot for placing baskets and bins to hold things that you don’t use on a daily basis.

Place Your Jewelry in Pockets

If you need storage space for jewelry, a double-sided hanging jewelry organizer is perfect. With 75+ clear pockets, you can store a ton of jewelry while taking up hardly any space.

Light Up Your Closet

If your closet doesn’t have a light inside, there’s an easy way to add one! You can use wireless motion sensor LED lights that can be mounted inside your closet so that the light goes on when you open your closet doors or reach inside.
